Win7 won't talk to other computers on LAN workgroup. Tells me "Enter Network Password"
I can't find the answer to this and need if possible, step by step help. I had a workgroup LAN going, with Win7 (laptop), Win2K Pro (desktop) & a printer, set up through W2K. Everything worked. Even Win 7 getting to my printer through the W2K computer. My Win7 laptop died. I replaced it with a different brand, but same OS. All computers have internet access through my router. Problem: The Win2K system sees the network and has access to the Win7 system. However, Win7 finds the Win2K computer but denies access when I click on its icon. I get a popup that says "Enter Network Password," gives me places for the information, and further down in the popup up it identifies my laptop as belonging to a Domain, which is the laptop's name. The laptop is set up to belong to my LAN "WORKGROUP," as is the W2K computer. When I enter what is asked for, "the user" for the compturer I'm trying to get to and that password, I get a new popup, very similar to the 1st one, that tells me access is denied--. It now shows the computer I'm trying to connect to as the Win7 computer (laptop's name) followed by the name of its user account. *I have reset the user names and passwords to be the same on all systems. Password authentication is turned "Off" on the Win7 machine, each computer in the LAN has accounts for the different users. The problem is the same whether connected with cat5 to the router or going wireless. I don't have a clue what to do next. Something must have been done right, since W2K can talk to the Win7 computer and both get through the router to the internet. But how in the world do I get the Win7 machine to not only find, but communicate with the W2K machine? I have read the referrence "I can't map a network drive from Windows 7..." but am still lost. bob

According the issue, please understand that Windows 7 and Windows 2000 use different LAN Manager authentication levels You need to change the NTLM authentication level in Windows 7. Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Please change the NTLM authentication level to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”. Please refer the following picture and steps. 1. Click Start button, type ”gpedit, msc” in Search Bar, press Enter. 2. Move to Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings ->Local Policies -> Securtiy Options. 3. Find Network security: LAN Manager authentication level, double click the item, chose Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated, click OK. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. ”

I'm having the same problem (or a very similar one: new Win7 machine refuses to make a connection to anything but one of the other Win7 machines. Older OSes and even one of the Win7 machines are being ignored). Since Win7 Home Premium does not include gpedit.msc, is there another solution?
